Merry Christmas!

It's been quite a wild ride in the Felton household this year.

We rang in the New Year while still in our home in Hawaii. We watched Matt's ship, the USS Rueben James leave for a 4.5 month deployment with Matt by our side at the beginning of February because only two short weeks later we started on our next adventure. In mid February we said goodbye to our friends and wished farewell to the Hawaiian islands. Matt went directly to Coronado Island to train for six weeks for his new position as a Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer while Adalyn and I went to Washington to stay with my parents and Emma went to play with Ebony at the Ceausu household. Thanks again Vince and Kristen! I loved having an extended stay in Washington to connect with friends and family I've been missing and all the yummy food and gorgeous scenery Washington has to offer. Matt joined us in Washington towards the end of March and we celebrated Adalyn's first birthday a couple of weeks early with a small birthday party at my parents home with a flower theme. How could she possibly be one already? Time sure is going by faster then ever.

April was just around the corner and that signaled the time for Matt to check into his new duty station at Camp Pendleton Marine Corp Base in Oceanside, CA. California here we come! We decided to make a little vacation out of it and detoured from I-5 for the Pacific Coast Highway. We made quite a few stops on the way including Lincoln City, OR, Bandon, OR, Ferndale, CA, San Francisco, CA, and Santa Barbara, CA. Adalyn was amazing the whole trip and we really enjoyed the spectacular coast line, farmland, and redwoods. We were even able to drive through a tree!

We arrived to our new home a few days before Adalyn's birthday and quickly settled into our new place. We live at the end of a cul-ta-sac only 1.5 miles away from Matt's new job. Matt has enjoyed the shorter hours and long lunch breaks compared to his position in Hawaii and has had lots and lots of time to spend playing with Adalyn and enjoying his hobbies.

We spent the summer getting to know San Diego county. We love Balboa park. We were able to spend 10 days in Montana with Matt's family and friends and I made a trip to visit my dear friend Brooke and her precious baby, Brayden, in North Carolina.

We also enjoyed having lots of visitors come stay with us. My parents came three times, several members of our Hawaii family, Stacey and Erika enroute to RI and Amanda on her way back to HI, came to stay with us, Matt's brother, Clay, and his family came, and we are currently lucky enough to be hosting Matt's parents for Christmas this year.

We struggled for several months this fall with the diagnosis of Trisomy 18 for our unborn son, David Jeremiah. We never imagined we'd be able to endure this kind of grief and sorrow. We have so many of our friends and family lifting us up in prayer and we were comforted by a never ending peace from God. David was stillborn on November 26 at 29 weeks gestation. Thank you to all who have kept us in your thoughts. We were blessed to have a midwife who not only supported each and every decision we made regarding the pregnancy, but was touched deeply by David's short life.

We spoiled Adalyn for Christmas this year. Matt made her a dollhouse and I tried my hand at a little woodworking and made her a play kitchen. We also gave a face lift to a VW Beetle power wheels we found at a garage sale with a fresh coat of paint and a new battery. We can't wait to watch her cruise around the neighborhood in it.

We enjoyed every bit of 2011 and we hope you did too! We are looking forward to seeing what the new year will bring to the Felton family. We are anticipating a big move in the fall of 2012. Hopefully it'll be close to you.

Twenty Five Weeks

We went to Bayfest at the Marine Corp base in Kaneohe. It was super hot out on the pavement, but we did our best to stay cool and covered. I was quite a bit surprised by how many parents didn't have their little ones covered up at all. Miss A had on a light weight long sleeve shirt and pants, baby sunscreen on exposed areas, and our favorite little hat we got from Kristen C. and her jogging stroller with a big attached umbrella on it. I think maybe I got a little sun though. Matt and I were astonished at the capabilities of the F-22A Raptor and the aerobatics of the Blue Angels.

Twenty Three Weeks

This big girl turned Twenty Three weeks! I can't believe it.

Adalyn helped Matthew and I celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary on September 9th.

We enjoyed our traditional anniversary bottle of wine. Each year we purchase a bottle of wine and save it to enjoy on our next anniversary. This Three Blondes Gewurtztraminer from Icicle Ridge Winery in Leavenworth is a delicious light and crisp wine we've enjoyed on several occasions.

We past up a fancy evening out this year and we enjoyed a tasty king crab dinner at home.

We also had another exciting event to celebrate on September 9th. Emma turned two!

We decided to head out to Waikiki and enjoy a big brunch at the Hale Koa Hotel as a family. Then we went on a nice long walk down the beach.

We ended up at the Aquarium. We took a nice rest in their lush green lawn before we enjoyed all the colorful creatures inside Waikiki's small yet beautiful aquarium.

This was Adalyn's second aquarium trip. She had already visited the Seattle Aquarium only a few weeks early on our trip to the mainland.

Twenty Two Weeks

This girl is Twenty Two Weeks old, oh my! It's bedtime at the end of week twenty two and we must remember to take some photos of this lil nugget before she falls fast asleep.

As you can see she starts off very relaxed and snuggly,

Then she is all about the photo shoot! 'Look at me, I'm cute!',

Then, as most of you may not believe, things can turn ugly quickly!

Looks like we've got ourselves a serious case of the miss crankypants.

Adalyn, Matthew, and I visited the Mighty Mo this week for a VIP tour of the USS Missouri. If you watch the new Hawaii 5-0 on Monday nights, you'll be seeing a lot of this ship. It was a very hot tour as I was 'wearing' Adalyn on this ship with a serious lack or AC in cramped quarters, but we stuck with the tour the whole time and learned lots about the Mo's long history.

I finally broke down and bought the must have item most mom's seem to all rave about. The Baby Bumbo! All you mainlanders might be surprised to hear that here on the islands this seat will run you 50 smackaroos brand new. I wasn't about to spend that much money on a hideous rubber seat, so we ebayed it for half the price. That's why it's blue instead of pink or purple or some other girly color. Maybe it'll come in handy if somewhere down the road number two is a boy.

Twenty One Weeks

Here's our little girl at 21 weeks. The dress she's wearing I picked out 41 weeks prior, right after I found out that our lil bun in the oven was a girl bun. She's such a little cutie!

Matt's wonderful three week vacation ended during this week and he had to go back to the ship, so Adalyn and I enjoyed time together at home taking it easy after all the vacation fun!

As you can see Miss A has quite a bit of personality. I think she would look great with blue hair. Don't you?

Adalyn received this cute as a button dress from her Aunt Brooke at her (my) baby shower. She finally fits in it. Well, it's a tad big, but close enough. I even had the perfect matching headband to accessorize!

Adalyn had her first experience swimming in the blue Hawaiian waters. She HATED it! Guess we'll try again next time.

Twenty Weeks

Little Miss A Rae turned twenty weeks old. What a big girl!

This was the last week of vacation and we spent most of the week in Washington visiting with my family.

Nineteen Weeks

Adalyn turned nineteen weeks old! We started the week off in Montana and then headed west to Washington for the second half of the week.

Adalyn went shooting for the first time. Well, I went shooting for the first time. Adalyn napped in the air conditioned truck while Matt taught me how to shoot a pistol.

Our first activity in Washington was beautiful Whatcom Falls Park. It was so fun to take Adalyn to one of our favorite parks. Matt and I used to spend a lot of time walking the trails while we were dating. The sun was shining, the air was crisp and it was soooo green and lush!

Over the weekend we went to Whidbey Island and headed straight for Coupeville. Our favorite little town right on the water. We were so lucky to have headed down that weekend because they were having their annual arts and crafts festival. There must have been hundreds of vendors there. There were so many unique housewares and gifts. It was a fantastic way to spend the afternoon.

We even got to see two tall ships in a mock battle. Cool!

Our last stop of the day on Whidbey was to Rosario Beach. I love this pic!

Eighteen Weeks

Eighteen weeks old and boy has it been quite the week for her.

Miss Adalyn started off the week with a trip to the doctor's office for her four month well baby. Her doctor was quite impressed with her. She is in the 50th percentile for weight and the 25th percentile for length and head circumference. Way to grow girl. You're getting so, so big!

And then before she knew it she was on her first airplane ride. All the way to the wild west in Montana. She did super duper great the whole way. She enjoyed the comfort of a Flye Baby sling in the airplane, which made it nice and cozy for Adalyn and me while we relaxed.

After a very short twelve hours of travel she was in the arms of Grandpa and Grandma Felton. Oh, this is the good life!

It didn't take us long to visit the infamous Staggering Ox for a delicious one of a kind sandwich. This is one of Matt's absolute favorite places to eat. We stopped in several times during our stay in Montana.

Seventeen Weeks

Matt was underway this past month with RIMPAC, so like a couple of girls we went shopping. Adalyn picked out a pair of super sweet shades. Isn't she just way too cute!

Matt came home from the underway and we were there to pick him up the moment the ship pulled in. Adalyn was excited to see dad and Matt was just estatic to see his baby girl.

Sixteen Weeks

Man oh man, sixteen weeks already?

Adalyn is finally big enough to fit into some of the dresses I bought for her oh so long ago. I guess I'm still going to have to teach her some lady like manners. This dress came in a two pack with a super cute navy blue and white polka dot onesie with a lady bug applique on it. It was the first baby girl clothes I bought after I found out that we were going to have a girl. Boy does that seem like forever ago!

Adalyn and I pretty much spent this entire week getting ready for Amanda's baby shower. Adalyn was such a great momma's helper. During the shower she enjoyed all the attention from everyone and of course took a nice long nap in the shade of the palms.

Adalyn is starting to enjoy her tummy time a bit more still. She especially loves the bright colors and shapes on her Hawaiian style alphabet quilt!

This girl is really, really growing up into a little girl way to fast. She has started to sit up while supported. This is just happening way to quickly!

It's a BABY SHOWER!

This past weekend I was privileged enough to throw a baby shower for my wonderful friend and neighbor, Amanda. She is expecting an amazing little boy at the end of August and I for one can't wait to meet him.

I was very excited to try my hand at a baby shower spread filled with all kinds of yummy foods.

I hope it was to Amanda's liking.

I tried my hand at my first diaper cake. I think the creation turned out quite well. What do you think?

We played a few games. Quick, you have 30 seconds to memorize all the baby items on the tray. Think you could remember all of them. Jody, the winner, got 12 out 15 right.

We also played everyones favorite game. The dirty diaper game. We even had a few participants who hadn't played it before. It sure was fun trying to figure out what kind of melted candy bars were in each diaper. Eeewwwwwww!!!!!!!

We also decorated some onesies for the baby. This was a fun activity I had at one of my baby showers.

I think that they turned out pretty nice. He's going to be one stylin' little dud!

Finally it was time to open those gifts and check out all the good baby booty!

Fifteen Weeks

The girl is fifteen weeks old already and looking cuter by the day. Boy does time fly. We are getting pretty close to the four month mark!

Adalyn had some major milestones this past week. She had her first real giggle. That just may be the most wonderful sound I've ever heard. The second milestone she reached was on July 15th. She ROLLED OVER from her tummy to her back and I got to see it! Yay Adalyn.

Here is a picture of her right after the big event and you can tell that she is sure proud of her accomplishment.

I knew she had to be pretty close to rolling over because she had been having a lot of tummy time recently.

Adalyn loves the Hawaiian style alphabet baby quilt we got her. She really enjoys gazing at all the shapes and colors on the quilt.

After all that tummy time though lil' miss Adalyn does need some down time with her pink elephant.

Fourteen Weeks

Adalyn turned fourteen weeks this week. My oh my is she a growing girl.

She is barely fitting into her newborn clothes and and all her three month clothes are starting to fit her really well. Which is very exciting for me because she has a ton of cute three month outfits she got at her baby showers that I've been itching to get on her. She is sporting one of my favorite little dresses that she got at one of my showers in Washington.

Thanks everyone for all the cuteness!

Adalyn had a really great week. I was delighted to enjoy her first real giggle. We were sitting on the couch in the living room just talking and smiling when she just started to giggle. I think it might be one of the most wonderful sounds in the whole world. It just melted my heart.

Adalyn very much dislikes her tummy time. She usually just lays there and starts crying or just lays there and attempts to fit her entire fist into her mouth. Not this week though. Out of nowhere she decided she was going to go all pro and prop herself up high onto her elbows and look around, smile and coo. She was doing so well that she was almost able to roll over onto her back. I have a feeling that it may happen in the very near future.

Adalyn got her the first round of the polio vaccine this week and she did amazingly well. Just a couple tears, then some smiles, and then a nice long nap. The last time she had a vaccine it turned out that removing the band-aid proved to be much more painful for her than the actual shot so this time I removed it during her bath time.

Adalyn is getting so active these days that bath time has moved from the kitchen counter (easy for mom) to the bath tub because she was splashing around so much that the kitchen was getting a bath too. Now that she is sitting in her whale of tub bathtub inside of the bathtub she can really go to town splashing all around. She is a real water baby. I can't wait to get her in the ocean for a little play time when she gets a bit bigger. It won't be to much longer.

Unfortunately the Navy did what they always seem to do, and they took our Matthew away from us for three weeks. After saying our good byes at the pier we headed on over to the air force base near the mouth of the harbor to get one last glimpse of the ship before it sailed off into the ocean blue. Matt's ship will be participating in RIMPAC 2010. RIMPAC is the largest international maritime exercise held biannually. Fourteen countries are participating this year. Matt will be super duper busy while they're underway and won't be getting much sleep. He could really use everyone's prayers in the next few weeks.

Adalyn was pretty sad that Dad had to leave (or maybe it was me) so we had to head over to the NEX to get her a cute new snuggle bunny. She is really loving her new pink elephant. Maybe it will be one of her favorites as she grows up.

A Felton Fourth

Adalyn is wishing everyone a very happy Fourth of July. She's excited because it's her first fourth, her three month old birthday, she's happy to be an American baby, and very pround that her dad serves in the US Navy

We had a big BBQ at our place for the fourth and we had a whole bunch of friends come celebrate with us. We treated them to a big spread of yummy, yummy food which required a big trip to the commissary. I took a pic of all the food I bought before I started baking/cooking it all up.

I forget to take some pictures of the whole spread, but I did remember to photograph our BBQ beer can chicken, it was deliciously juicy, and my lemon curd trifle with fresh berries. It was tasty!

Our menu included:

Appetizers

pickeled asparagus wrapped in ham and cream cheese, baked brie with raspberry sauce, and deviled eggs

Main Course

Honey mustard salmon, pulled pork sliders, beer can chicken, homemade baked beans, asian coleslaw, corn on the cob with chive butter, potato salad and sparkling italian basil lemonade to drink.

Dessert

Lemon curd trifle with fresh berries and reese's peanut butter bars.

Everything turned out super yummy and there were no leftovers.

Thirteen Weeks

Thirteen Weeks!

Little Miss Adalyn celebrated her three month birthday on the Fourth of July. She is even sporting a cute Red, White and Blue themed outfit for the occasion.

Adalyn spent most of this week just being cute! Isn't she just the cutest thing you've ever seen. I think she is.

She also worked on some tummy time. She doesn't care for it to much. Emma supervised.

Lindsay, one of the wonderful Navy wives I'm friends with here designed and painted these wonderful letters for Adalyn's room. The will always be a wonderful reminder of the time we spent in Hawaii and how luckily we've been to have such good friends here in the Hawaiian Islands.

Matthew and I attended a reception on one of the Aussie ships here in Hawaii for RIMPAC 2010. It was my first time to leave Adalyn for the evening to go out with Matt. It went pretty well, but I was very anxious to get back to that sweet little girl. Thanks to my super amazing neighbor Amanda for loving on Adalyn for a few hours, so we could get away just the two of us.

Adalyn started getting her vaccines this week. I've decided to have her get them all, but I'm feeling uncomfortable with her having so many all at one time. So we are separating them out a bit. She received her first does of Prevnar on Wednesday. She did so well. She only cried for a minute or so and then she was all smiles and started talking up a storm. She's such a happy go lucky baby!

Twelve Weeks

Adalyn is twelve weeks old.

I've been enjoying every minute I get to spend with her that I've started to forget to take pictures of her. I spend almost all of my day just watching her. She is so much more entertaining than the TV. She is such an unbelievably happy baby! She smiles, and coos most of the day. She enjoys looking around at her surroundings and gazing at her toys. I can almost see her learning. She is soooo wonderful!

We received a very special package in the mail this week. A beautiful handmade quilt from Adalyn's great grandma Ada and great grandpa Case. Isn't it gorgeous? It is so soft! I absolutely love it and I've been showing it off to everyone that comes over. Adalyn doesn't know how lucky she is to have this special gift. I'm sure she'll enjoy it for many years to come as she gets older and will cherish it for a long, long time. Thank you Grandma and Grandpa!

Eleven Weeks

Adalyn is now eleven weeks old and she is starting to fit into some of her three month clothes. I can't hardly believe she fit into those tiny preemie clothes only a few months ago. She is growing up way too fast.

Adalyn had her two month check-up this week and she is doing outstanding. She weighed 11 pounds 3 ounces and is 22 inches long. It's amazing how fast little girls grow. Her doctor had a hard timing believing that Adalyn was the same intrauterine growth restriction baby she had seen two months prior. She was amazed at how strong and happy Adalyn is and said we were very lucky to have such an easy, laid back baby.

Silly Dad

Spent an afternoon in Waikiki. Believe it or not, this is our first picture with Duke! It only took us nearly two years to pose with the statue most people pose with as soon as they get to Waikiki.

Matthew had to go back to work at some point. So on the days he has to spend the night on the ship we bring him dinner. It looks like Matt might be a bit more interested in Adalyn than the Taco Del Mar I brought him.

Ten Weeks

Ten weeks old and Adalyn loved spending time with Dad. Matthew had nine days off after returning from deployment and we tried to get in some fun family activities.

We went to the Honolulu Zoo. Adalyn slept almost the entire trip, but I think she liked the zebras and giraffes behind us.

King Kamehameha Day was celebrated in June and we were amazed by the beautiful leis adorning his statue.

We went to the King Kamehameha Day parade and enjoyed the beautifully adorned royal families and horses. Although, I must say it was no Ski-to-Sea Parade. Parade's in Hawaii are a LOT different from those on the mainland. I particularly missed the marching bands, fire trucks, and shriners.

Once again we made it out to the beach. Matt tried his hand at stand up paddle boarding again.

Then he snuggled up with his favorite little girl!

Nine Weeks

Nine weeks old and it was the week we'd been waiting for for a long, long time. Dad came home this week. Yeah!

The day before Dad came home. All the wives got together to put up a welcome home sign for the ship.

The ship is pulling in behind us! I can't wait to get my first glimpse of Matthew. There were hundreds of smiles all around on the pier and ship alike.

Eight Weeks

Eight weeks old! She's looking a little boyish in this one because she's sporting little boys PJ's. I couldn't help but buy them though because they say 'I give good hugs' on the them and Adalyn gives the very best hugs

ever!

Adalyn enjoyed her very first concert. We watched the Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force show bands with Erika. They really rocked out the park in Waikiki and Adalyn did a lot of dancing. She was really digging the music!

Seven Weeks

Seven weeks old. Not sure where the photos with the teddy bear are for this week. Opps, maybe I forgot to take them. But this one is taken on the right day.

Auntie Brooke was still here for most of the week and we made the most of it. We made sure to visit Duke's bar and grill on the beach and we enjoyed cocktails and Hula Pie. We ate the whole thing! It was huge too.

Six weeks old today!

We were soooooo excited to have Auntie Brooke come visit for a week and a half. We did a ton of fun stuff and Adalyn was able to check out all the sights with Brooke. Here we are overlooking Diamond Head, Waikiki, Honolulu, and Pearl Harbor.

Five Weeks

Three Weeks

Here is Adalyn at three weeks. Her elephant PJ's are way to big. I was thankful to find a few preemie sized outfits that fit her until she grew into all of her newborn sized clothes.

Adalyn had her two week check-up today. She weighed 6 pounds and 7.8 ounces and is 19 3/4 inches long. Not only did she gain weight back up to her birth weight but she surpassed it. Way to go little girl!

We've been spending lots of time on the couch recouperating. Adalyn takes after me and loves to sleep!

Two Weeks

Adalyn is now two weeks old! We spent almost that whole week at home relaxing and adjusting to life at home with a baby. Adalyn has such a mild temperment and is mostly happy with anything as long as she gets to eat when she's hungry.

We did make a trip out to babies r us to pick up some preemie size diapers and a few preemie outfits. Here she is in one of my favorites. A tiny, tiny pink and white stripe sleep sack with a cute little lamb on the chest.

As many of you know, Matt left for deployment to the Pacific with the USS Reuben James in January. It seems like forever ago that he left and I've been counting down the days since we said our goodbyes. At the same time I can't believe it is almost over already. We are getting down to the final countdown and I am getting so ansy to get my arms around him when he walks off that ship. I must say that this has been a very crazy time in my life. When Matthew left we were 26 weeks pregnant and I was attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Since I was pregnant and in charge of taking care of Emma, the dog, my good friend Erika moved in to help me. I have really enjoyed having a roommate for these past few months. I never thought that I'd be living with anyone other than Matt, but I think that it was definitely a blessing to have her company.

In February I was able to make it home to Washington for a few days and I enjoyed a beautiful baby shower thrown by my wonderful friends Brooke and Loralei. Thanks ladies, you're the best. And another shower thrown my mom. I was so wonderfully blessed to be loved on by so many people. I was even lucky enough to spend a little bit of time with Matt's mom, sister, brother, niece's and nephew who traveled all the way from Montana and Idaho to see me. That was one jam packed visit home.

I celebrated my 27th birthday on March 1st. This was my first birthday since Matt and I have been together that he has missed. So, I enjoyed an evening out in Waikiki at PJ Changs with some girlfriends.

In March my Hawaii girlfriends Erika and Lindsay threw me a third baby shower at the beach at Hickam Air Force Base. In all my life I never imagined that I would have a baby shower on the beach in tropical paradise. It really shows you that you never know where life will take you.

On April 4th our baby girl, Adalyn Rae was born.

That was one of the most wonderful experiences I have ever had in my life and I hope that if we expand our family that Matthew will be there, instead of on the phone, to share in the joy.

I spent the next month getting used to motherhood with the help and guidance of my mom. It was absolutely wonderful to have her company and her help was very much appreciated. It was so great to be able to put all my energy into bonding with and taking care of Adalyn.

After my mom left at the beginning of May I celebrated my very first Mother's Day as a mom. It was just Adalyn and I and we just enjoyed each other.

Mid-May my friend Brooke came out to visit and help me with the baby. It was great timing since she was able to watch Adalyn for me while I had finals at school. We had a lot of fun during her visit which included three trips to the beach and two hawaiian shave ice.

Since Brooke's return home to Washington, Adalyn and I have been getting ready for Matt to come home. I don't have very many days left and I feel like I have so much to do to prepare. I want everything to be perfect for him so that when he walks in the door he can do nothing but relax and enjoy his family. I'm can't wait to hug him, kiss him, and hear all about the time he spent on the ship, in The Republic of Nauru, Palau, East Timor, the Phillipines, and Japan.

One Week

Wow, this was a very crazy week adjusting to a new family member in the house. We took Adalyn to her first check-up the day after we were released. We were very happy to see that her weight dropped within the normal 5-10% range to 5lbs 3oz. She did have jaundice and was at risk for it to get worse because she had some extra risk factors. We made sure to give her lots and lots of sunlight and after a few 'sun' treatments she looked fabulous! I don't think we left the house for the rest of the week and we just stayed home and enjoyed Adalyn.

Snuggle time, well, I think just about every minute of everyday that week was snuggle time.

34 Hours

Here's my baby bump at 36 weeks pregnant. Silly me, I thought it would still be growing for another four weeks.

A few days after this photo was taken I had a ultrasound appointment to check Adalyn's growth. The umbilical cord attached onto the side of the placenta resulting in a decreased amount of nutrition reaching the baby. So, needless to say she wasn't growing as rapidly as many other babies. I was devasted to find out that at this appointment they were not satisfied with the growth that she had made since my last ultrasound two weeks prior and that they felt it necessary to have me induced right away. I had spent my entire pregnancy preparing to have a natural childbirth with minimal medical intervention and now I no longer had this option. The doctors wanted to admit me right away that afternoon, but I was not in a good state of mind with the news I had just received and I was able to convince them to allow me to go home for the evening and return the next morning.

Here I am after admission to Tripler Army Medical Center at 10am on April 3rd in the room I will be spending plenty of time in. The first day went pretty smooth and I was able to have some visitors and watch TV. Around 2am though, the contractions really started to kick in and I was very happy to use some of the laboring methods I had learned in my Bradley Method classes. Of course the fetal monitor and IV really limited my mobility and made my body pretty sore. Shortly after that around 5am it was evident that the woman in the room next to me was about to deliver her baby when Erika, my birthing coach, and I were awaken by the loudest blood curdeling screams I had ever heard in my entire life. They really should make those rooms a little more sound proof.

Everything continuted to progress well and I was slowly having some progression. Around 4pm on April 4th my midwife informed me that I was at 4 centimeters dialated and that I would need to have my water broke to continue to progress. Between my water breaking and the pitocin my contractions became so unbelieveably strong I really had no control of my body because the pain was so out of control. At this point my midwife informed me that it would most likely take me another 6 to 8 hours before I would be ready for delivery. I was sweating buckets and I felt so out of control that I decided it would probably be best to take an epidural. Very shortly after that, about an hour, I was having pain very low in my torso and thought that it may be time to push. None of the nurses or my midwife believed me when I told them I thought that it was time and they didn't want to check again so soon to prevent infection. Finally my midwife gave in and was surprised to discover that I was at 10 centimeters and 100% effaced. She told me to go for it. I'm guessing that my body dialating so fast may have been partly to blame for the intense pain I had been feeling. I pushed for about 30 minutes and Adalyn Rae was born at 8:19pm, April 4th, 2010 I was very pleased to have had her on Easter day. She weighed 5lbs 9oz and measured 17.5 inches in length.

Matthew was on deployment with the USS Reuben James. We were fortunate enough that the ship was in port in Japan, allowing him to call me in the hospital.

So, my mom caught a flight to Honolulu on Sunday and made it there just in time to hold her while she was only an hour old.

Hospital policy requires all first time mothers to stay in the hospital for 36 hours after delivery. That meant I stayed in total 3 nights in the hospital. Needless to say we were ready to head home that Tuesday morning. I recall thinking that all the newborn clothes I had shopped for looking so small. Well, they weren't small enough for this little peanut. She's wearing the dress I had picked out for her to come home in, but I think it just might be bigger than her.

Going on Deployment to Asia

Matthew and I have known for a long, long time that he would be going on a four and half month deployment come the beginning of the year. Most of the time I look forward to the holiday season, but it was a bit difficult this year since we knew that Matthew would be leaving shortly after.

and then some more good byes out on the flight deck.

After a lot of hugs and a few tears, the other junior officer wives and I stood out on the pier waving goodbye to our husbands. It sure was nice to have some good friends from the ship to be with during this time.

It takes a while for the ship to make it all the way from the pier out to the ocean so Emma, Erika and I headed out to the dog beach on Hickam Air Force Base to get one last glimpse of the USS Reuben James as it heads out to sea.

We were close enough to the ship that we could see all the sailors in their dress whites manning the rails. They all looked so handsome.

Matthew is out to sea and will hopefully have many wonderful adventures thoughout the Pacific.

Christmas Wishes

Matthew, Amy, and Baby Girl Felton would like to wish all of our family and friends a very Mele Kalikimaka all the way from chilly Honolulu.

A lot has happened with our family over the past year. This time last year we were still getting settled into our new home in Hawaii and working on making new friends. Hawaii was quite a culture shock from what we were used to in the Pacific Northwest, but we are so glad to be here in paradise.

At the beginning of this year I started a job as a part-time teller at First Hawaiian Bank. Apparently in Hawaii you have to have way more education or experience than on the mainland and my 7+ years in the banking industry didn't really help me find anything I was happy with. So, we decided I should quit my job and go back to school. I am currently working on earning my bachelors degree in dental hygiene at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Matthew has had a very busy year at work and we don't see much of an end in sight to the business in the near future. Matt attended quite a few schools over the year including a ton of training to become a Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure Officer for his ship the USS Reuben James. Matt was also gone for three weeks in November to attend a Surface Warfare Officer school in Newport, Rhode Island. I wasn't able to accompany him to Rhode Island because of my school schedule. Matt's ship has been extremely busy the past month working seven days a week preparing for the big Navy INSURV inspection. It was a very tiring month for the sailors and families especially with the holidays around the corner, but Matt's ship passed the inspection and now they are getting ready for a deployment coming up at the beginning of the year.

Our most exciting news of the year is that we found out in August that we are expecting our first baby. We are so very thrilled to start a family. We found out that we are expecing a baby girl earlier this month and we can't wait to hold her! We are getting ready for her big debut on April 24th, 2010!

We miss all of our family and friends that we are away from for the holidays and we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Vacation in Hawaii

After a year living away from home in Hawaii, my parents came to visit right before the Christmas holiday. I was so glad to have them visit even if it was only for a week. We had a busy agenda and a lot of fun to squeeze into seven days. After their flight landed we headed home to settle in. We went on a short walk around the neighborhood with Emma and then we all took a short nap. By the time Matt was home from work we were ready to eat some delicious hawaiian style pizza so we got Big Kahuna Pizza and Stuffs on the phone ASAP. Dinner was yummy!

Thursday was the first full day of our vacation and probably the busiest! We started bright and early and we headed over the H-3 freeway to Kailua to check out Crepes No Ka Oi. I had a delicious crepe filled with bananas, strawberries, and nutella. It was the perfect start to the day!

Then we headed over to the famous Kailua Beach Park for our first beach visit of the day. This one was my mom's favorite. She decided to do get her toes wet and my dad prefered to take in the sights from the sand.

Following our visit to Kailua we headed on a full day drive up the Windward coast and around the Northshore. We stopped at Kualoa Beach Park to check out Chinaman Hat Island and to snap a few pictures

Our next stop of the day was Waimea Bay Beach. The famous Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay competition was held here earlier in the week and the beach was boasting 50 foot waves. While we visited Waimea Bay the waves weren't quite as big, but only experienced surfers and bodyboarders were allowed in the water. We really enjoyed watching all the action that was out on the water.

While we were in the Waimea Bay area we decided to also visit Waimea Valley and check out one of Hawaii's many beautiful waterfalls. This was a new experience for me too, as Matt and I hadn't visited this park yet.

We were starting to get pretty hungry by this time so we thought we best head over to Haleiwa Town for dinner, but we had to stop at Laniakea beach to see the sea turtles. We were in luck and a 225 lb. female turtle was out sun bathing!

Finally we made it to Haleiwa Town. We were craving some hawaiian shave ice from the famous Matsumoto Grocery so we had dessert first. After the shave ice we decided to do a little shopping around the town and then we headed to one of my favorite places. To get fresh Kahuku shrimp from a shrimp truck, kinda like the taco trucks some of you are used to seeing in Washington. After a long, long day seeing the island we headed home and slept well that night

One of our families favorite things about the holiday season is Christmas Lights! The Navy's MWR program arranges a tour of the Honolulu City Lights that the city puts on every year for Christmas. The best part about the tour is that it is in an open air trolley! So much fun.

We were pretty busy most of the week and Emma wasn't getting as much attentioned as she likes, so we decided to go to the neighborhood dog park one day and let her play off leash. She had a fantastic time making friends with some of the other dogs and lying around in the soft grass. She decided to pose for a photo shoot here.

Yes, we did spend plenty of time playing in the water. We spent two days playing in the beautiful white sands of Waimanalo Beach. This one is my favorite. This isn't a popular beach for tourists, because it isn't very close to anything else touristy and would be difficult to reach by bus, so there is always plenty of beach and never crowded.

After our visit at Waimanalo Beach we drove home along the south coast of the island and stopped at some scenic vistas. This is Sandy beach below.

Don't think we didn't spend some time in Waikiki. Of course we did. We had a wonderful evening eating at Duke's Canoe Club and then walking the beach after sunset on friday night. We came back to Waikiki saturday morning to watch Santa arrive via outrigger canoe but unfortunately we missed it. That was alright because we enjoyed people watching and a cup of coffee

Finally the end of the week arrived and we had enough time for one more activity before we had to head to the airport. We drove to the top of tantalus mountain to take in the scenic views of Diamond Head, Waikiki, Honolulu, and Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately when we got to the top we realized it was a pretty voggy day and the visibility wasn't spectacular. (Vog is similar to fog, but it is caused by southern winds blowing volcanic ash from the Big Island towards the other islands)

Well, all good things must come to an end and I am looking forward to our next visitors here in paradise. Will you be our next guests? The guest room is always ready!

One Fabulous Year in Hawaii

On November 7th we celebrated our one year anniversary on Oahu, Hawaii. Here are some pictures of all the fun we've had since we've been here.

Unfortunately shortly after we arrived Matt flew out to meet up with his ship, the USS Reuben James, in Saipan. The ship returned to port a week before Christmas and all the men and women aboard looked so very handsome in their working whites and orchid leis.

A few snap shots of our favorite hike to Keana Point. The first picture of Matt standing in the sand you can see both the Northshore and Waianae coasts of the island at the same time. It's a really beautiful hike that makes you feel like you are at the very end of the world.

We've gone to the Honolulu Zoo a few times. Matt's favorite animal is the elephant, I like the giraffes.

We went to Maui over my birthday weekend last March. The beach on the left is beautiful Napili Bay where we stayed. On the left is us at the summit of extinct volcano Haleakala at 10,023 feet above sea level.

Sheila, who I worked with at WECU, visited me in April. Unfortunately it rained quite a bit while she was here, but we were able to hit the beach on a couple of nice days.

We love hitting up the Northshore for a much needed break from school and work. We like eating at Haleiwa Joes, on the left. We ordered another unexpectedly large drink once again, it must be a Hawaiian thing. Of course no trip to the Northshore is complete without a stop at Matsumoto's for some delicious Hawaiian shave ice. Matt likes his with ice cream at the bottom. Matt's enjoying his shave ice with our good friend Luis.

Another beautiful location of Oahu is the Pali Lookout. Here you can see beautiful views of the windward side of the island, including the charming town of Kailua. The photo of the road was the old Pali highway, it is now a short trail you can take a leisurely stroll on.

Over the summer we went on a short hike to Manoa falls. It started out really nice, but about half way up the rain started pouring down like it only can in Hawaii. By the time we got to the top Matt, Emma, and I were completely soaking wet through and through and covered in mud. It was quite an adventure.

We visited the Laie Temple in Laie near the Northshore. It was under renovation so we weren't able to tour the inside of the temple, but the temple exterior and grounds were unbelievably gorgeous.

Hickam Air Force Base recently hosted 'Wings over the Pacific', an airshow featuring The Thunderbirds. Here we are posing with a MiG 17.

Matt and I attended our first Navy Birthday Ball. It was held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. It was a lot of fun to get all dressed up for an evening.

Of course we can't forget one of our favorite members of our family, Emma. She's not as big a fan of the beach as Matt and I, but she especially loves the dog park in our neighborhood. As Matt says, "The world would be a better place if everyone had an Emma."

Living in Hawaii has been an unbelievable experience for us. It must be the closest you can get to living in a different country without leaving the U.S. We are looking forward to moving back to the mainland in the future, but we will definitely miss the islands when it comes time to leave.

Too much stuff!

Believe it or not, this is going to be the nursery for our baby. Obviously this room is going to need lot of work before baby comes home. When we moved in, all of the stuff we didn't know what to do with ended up in the third bedroom. We haven't really needed the space for anything other than storage till now, so I'm going to have to figure out what to do with all this stuff. The biggest road block in completing this task is going to be the lack of any storage place whatsoever in our circa 1944 plantation style home. Apparently back then they didn't own any possessions.

I think I may have to get some type of room divider or screen to hide things like the vacuum cleaner and a few other things that have no hall closet or laundry room to be stored in and then bring out a dozen garbage bags and say Aloha to a bunch of the junk I haven't looked at in over a year. Obviously if it hasn't made it's way out of this room in the past year, I can probably say good buy to it. Maybe we'll have a yard sale. Well, it's going to be a project. It's one that I've known about since we moved in, but since this bedroom has a door like most do, it's been very easy to ignore the mess. This mess is turning into a problem now because the baby needs a bedroom, and it is going to be here in 25.5 weeks so I better get started.

And Baby Makes Three.

The two of us were delighted to find out in August of this year that we are expecting. We could not be happier. Unfortunately the timing was not perfect as Matt has a lot of work to do on his ship through January, at which point they will be leaving for deployment and he won't be able to be here for the birth of his first son/daughter. I guess that's all a part of the military life. Lucky for me, another wife from the ship and a good friend, will be helping me prepare for the baby as well as coach me through labor and delivery.

We had our first ultrasound on October 6. There is just one baby in there and the doctor said he/she is looking great and is the right size for his gestational age. We couldn't believe how active our little blueberry is already. He was jumping all around in there!

Besides the impending bundle of joy, life at the Felton household has been very busy. I am going to school and taking more than a full loads worth of credits. It has been quite difficult for me this session with all the first trimester symptoms I had. I just started my second trimester this week and I can already say that I am feeling so much better. Taking care of our three bedroom 1944 home is a bit more work than taking care of our 1.5 bedroom apartment in Washington, but we love the uniqueness of our Hawaiian style plantation home. To top it off for me at home, Emma has more energy than Matt and I combined and she requires a lot of attention, but she is the most loving dog ever and makes every naughty moment worth it. Matt on the other hand is very busy at work. He has had many short underways in the past few months and when they aren't underway they have been working 12-14 hour days to get ready for the big inserv inspection they will be having later this year. Needless to say we haven't been seeing as much of each other as we would like, and unfortunately other than time off during the holiday season I don't think we will be getting as much time together as we would like until late next summer.

Moving to Hawaii

Well, it is day three in Hawaii. We arrived Friday very early in the afternoon. That was quite interesting as we almost forgot Matt's garment bag with his dress uniforms on the bag carousel, then we realized that we had forgotten to get cash for a taxi. So Matt ran all over the airport looking for an ATM while I waited on the curb with all our bags, the only worldly possessions that we had until our household goods arrived in about a month or two. This was going to be interesting. We hopped into the taxi and had him take us to the Vehicle Processing Center to pick up the mustang, which we had shipped in advance, so it would be here waiting for us. That went very smoothly. While Matt was inspecting the car, I got a wonderful call from the Navy saying our household goods shipment had arrived and was ready for delivery. What? We weren't expecting all our things for quite some time. Only problem was that we didn't even know how to get to our hotel let alone have a permanent home. So, we had them put it in storage until we secured a place to live. Matt and I stayed at the Navy Lodge on historic Ford Island for the next 10 days at which point we moved into an old plantation style home in military housing at Pearl City. That same day we decided we had lived to long together without a puppy of our own and we welcomed Emma into our family. She has made life very exciting for us.

I Love Strawberries!

Sometimes I just don't know what to have for lunch. Sometimes I have a craving for something cool and fresh. Sometimes I have visions of strawberry shortcake. It's during these these times that a big bowl of strawberries is the perfect treat. How do I make them extra delicious you might ask? Well first I clean my berries then I remove the green tops and slice them into large bite size pieces. Sprinkle with a few teaspoons of sugar and a splash of Grand Mariner and let them macerate for at least ten minutes. While the strawberries are getting extra yummy get out your high speed beaters and start whipping up some fresh heavy whipping cream. It really has surprised me that so many people that I know don't know how to make fresh whipped cream, and they just use cool whip or 'stuff' out of the can. Its SO EASY! Be sure to start out with clean, dry bowl and beaters. If they have been chilled in the freezer for a bit first that will make it even easier. Whipping cream will double in volume from start to finish so you should measure out 50% of the amount you want to end up with. Then all you have to do is beat till it becomes light and fluffy. When it looks almost done add powdered sugar to it, a tablespoon at a time until it reaches your desired sweetness. All that's left is putting it together. Pick out a pretty bowl, put the strawberries and all the yummy juices in first, top with whipped cream, and sprinkle with cinnamon. Then dig in. It's up to you if you want to share.
